The District Court can issue two kinds of orders which direct one person to stay away from another person:
A “protective order” directs a spouse or other person to whom a person is related, with whom a person lives or has lived or with whom a person has a child to stay away. During regular business hours – 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday – you may apply for a protective order at the District Court Clerk’s Office, Kent County Courthouse, 103 North Cross Street, Chestertown, 410 810-3360.

After court hours, District Court Commissioners can issue interim protective orders that are effective immediately. The District Court Commissioners are located in the Kent County Courthouse. The telephone number is 410 810-3370.

A “peace order” directs a person who is unrelated to and does not live with another person to stay away. Only a judge can issue a peace order. You may apply for a peace order at the District Court Clerk’s Office during regular business hours.

Call the court immediately and explain what happened. Find out if the court has issued a bench warrant for your “failure to appear.” If it has, you can call us on 410 778-1800 and come to the Chestertown Police Department for service of the warrant.

You can file a criminal complaint with the District Court Commissioners, who will help you through the process of filing. The District Court Commissioners are located in the Kent County Courthouse on Cross Street in Chestertown. The telephone number is 410 810-3370.

Contact the Town of Chestertown’s office at 410-778-0500. If you are a resident in the “resident only” area, The Town Office will assign a sticker for your vehicle that will indicate that you are a resident in that area.

We want to know about your complaint. You can call 410 778-1800 and ask to speak with Chief Ronald M. Dixon. The receipt and processing of all complaints will be in conformance with established procedures. You can send a certified letter, return receipt requested, to your neighbor, informing him that you’ll prosecute him for trespass if he doesn’t stop. Send us a copy of the letter. If the neighbor subsequently trespasses, call us and we will send an officer to investigate.

Call 9-1-1 any time you believe you are in physical danger. An officer will be dispatched to assist you.
You can apply to the District Court for a protective order, directing the abuser to stay away from you and your residence. A District Court Commissioner can issue an “interim protective order” 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
